LABOR WELCOMES AUDITOR-GENERAL’S REPORT ON NATIONAL RENTAL AFFORDABILITY SCHEME

Labor welcomes the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) performance audit report into the administration of the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS).

Following a campaign waged against NRAS by vested interests, the Abbott government moved to phase out the program in its thoroughly discredited 2014-2015 budget.

The oversight problems identified by the ANAO are readily rectifiable and shouldn't be an excuse to scrap NRAS. Labor welcomes the Department of Social Services acceptance of the ANAO report recommendations and notes the conclusion in the report that DSS has processed allocations, market rent valuations and incentive claims in accordance with the regulatory framework.

Addressing the growing housing affordability crisis demands political leadership. Sadly, none is forthcoming from the Turnbull Government.

The Turnbull Government has no plan to increase the supply of affordable housing other than to blame the States for not releasing land quickly enough.

Only Labor has the will to tackle the housing affordability crisis. Labor has plans for reform of negative gearing and capital gains tax concessions on the table.

Labor will carefully consider the ANAO audit report and factor its findings into the development of further policies aimed at increasing the supply of affordable housing.
