LABOR PROTECTS AUSTRALIANS FROM NEW YEAR’S DAY CUTS

Labor has protected families, pensioners and young people from a series of New Year’s Day cuts that the Turnbull Government wanted to start from today.

Labor has protected Australian families and pensioners from:

  • Cuts to Paid Parental Leave to 80,000 new mums;
  • Changes to the eligibility for Newstart for young people between the ages 22 and 24 - a cut of around $2,500 a year;
  • Cuts to 190,000 migrant pensioners – by limiting the amount of time they can spend overseas before their pension is cut;
  • Abolition of the Pensioner Education Supplement;
  • Abolition of the Education Entry Payment.

Malcolm Turnbull thinks it’s fair to take money from hard-working families, pensioners and young people at the same time as giving big business and the banks a $50 billion handout.

Malcolm Turnbull and the Liberals just don’t get fairness.

If Mr Turnbull gets his way from today around 80,000 new mothers would be up to $12,000 worse off.

If Mr Turnbull gets his way he would change the eligibility age for Newstart which will push jobseekers between the ages of 22 and 24 onto the lower Youth Allowance – a cut of around $48 a week or around $2,500 a year.

Mr Turnbull and the Liberals are hell-bent on cutting the pension to around 190,000 migrant pensioners by limiting the amount of time they can spend overseas to six weeks before their pension is cut.

On top of all of that Mr Turnbull wants to abolish the Pensioner Education Supplement and Education Entry Payment.

Labor will continue to stand up for families, pensioners and young Australians by opposing Mr Turnbull’s unfair cuts.
