MEDIA RELEASE

APPOINTMENT TO SHADOW MINISTRY

I am honoured to have been appointed as the Shadow Minister for Skills and Apprenticeships and Shadow Minister for Housing and Homelessness and I am grateful to the Leader of the Opposition for the opportunity to serve Labor in portfolios that are central to a fair and decent society.

I congratulate my predecessors in these portfolios, Sharon Bird and Senator Katy Gallagher for their great work in the last Parliament and I look forward to working with Labor’s outstanding team in the Education and Social Services portfolios.

The election earlier this month was a clear contest between Labor’s agenda to build a fairer Australia and the Coalition’s unfair cuts to Medicare and unfair tax cuts for the big banks.

While Malcolm Turnbull has been able to form a government, he has no mandate for policies that will make Australia a less fair and less equal country.

The Coalition has presided over a period of shameful neglect of Australia’s homeless, wilful ignorance of the housing affordability crisis facing young Australians and the collapse of apprenticeship numbers as a result of its disastrous policies in these areas.

I will hold the Turnbull government to account for its unfair policies and prosecute the Labor case for a fairer, more equal society.
